Deciphering the Painted Pyramid: Recent Epigraphic Finds at the  Ancient Maya City of Calakmul, Mexico

Simon Martin, Associate Curator, American Section, describes  
spectacular new discoveries at Calakmul, recently published in the  
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and reported in media internationally. Ancient Maya murals at the site of Calakmul, Mexico, buried for 13 centuries, feature unprecedented scenes of daily life. The murals rank among the most important yet found in the Maya region.
